Changing your car’s colour used to mean a body shop, a spray booth and a permanent decision. Today two films can do the job in days, and both come off later to reveal the factory paint underneath.
On the showroom floor they look similar, but on an Alberta highway they behave very differently. The difference comes down to a single number, and once you know it, choosing between colour changing PPF and vinyl wrap gets much easier. In this article we’ll cover everything about a car colour change Edmonton drivers need to know.
The Thickness Gap Behind Colour PPF vs Vinyl Wrap
Film thickness is measured in mils, and one mil is one thousandth of an inch.
Colour paint protection film runs 7 to 9 mils. Vinyl wrap runs 3 to 4 mils. Those are the figures our installers work with, and manufacturers publish the same numbers. 3M’s product bulletin for Wrap Film Series 2080, one of the most widely used premium cast vinyls, puts that film at 3.5 mil before adhesive.3M describes their Film Color Series as 70% thicker than their vinyl Wrap Film 2080.
That gap decides what each film can do. Vinyl changes your colour. Colour PPF changes your vehicle’s colour and absorbs rock chips.
The extra material is thermoplastic polyurethane, the same impact-absorbing urethane used in clear paint protection film. When a stone hits at highway speed, that layer flexes and spreads the energy before it reaches your clear coat. Vinyl offers light defence against scuffs, contaminants and UV, which suits a vehicle that lives mostly in the city. On the Henday, the QEII or Highway 16, the thicker, coloured paint protection film earns its place.

What Colour-Changing PPF Actually Is
Colour PPF is paint protection film with the colour built into the film itself. You get the protective urethane body of clear PPF, a self-healing topcoat and a new colour in a single layer, offered in gloss, satin and matte finishes depending on the product line.
Major manufacturers back these films with long warranties. 3M, for example, covers its Protection Wrap Film Color Series for 10 years.
Self-Healing: Where Urethane Pulls Ahead
PPF topcoats are elastomeric. Light swirl marks and fine scratches, the kind left by a careless wash or a ring near a door handle, relax back to smooth once the film warms up. Manufacturers are clear that deeper cuts through the film need repair or replacement, so self-healing covers surface marks only.
Standard cast vinyl is built differently, and the light marks it collects stay in the surface until the panel is rewrapped. Over a few years of Alberta washes, the difference shows.
The healing runs on heat. In summer, sun on the panels does the work. In an Edmonton January, a heated garage or warm water poured over the area brings the same result.
Colour Change PPF Cost vs Vinyl vs a Repaint
Here is how the three routes to a new colour compare.
Option | Typical price | Rock chip protection | Reversible |
Vinyl wrap at Ming Shine | $3,600 to $6,000 by body style | Light | Yes |
Colour PPF at Ming Shine | $4,500 to $7,500+, Quoted per vehicle | Yes | Yes |
Full respray in a new colour | $12,000 to $15,000+ | Same as factory paint | Permanent |
Vinyl pricing is published by body style on our custom vinyl wrapping page, from $3,600 for a compact car up to $6,000 for specialty vehicles (but do ask for a quote), with three to six or more business days in the shop. Used vehicles need a paint correction and cleanse before wrapping, so budget for that if your paint has some kilometres on it.
Colour PPF costs more than vinyl, reflecting the thicker material and the protection that comes with it. We quote it per vehicle because size, panel count and finish choice all move the number, but the range is typically $4,500 to $7500+.
A colour-change respray sits at the top of the range at $12,000 to $15,000 and up, often with disassembly and jamb work, because a new paint colour has to reach every door jamb, trunk channel and engine bay edge where the old colour would otherwise show.
One question worth asking on any film quote: are the door jambs included? Most colour-change film work covers the exterior panels, and jambs are typically quoted as an extra, so confirm before you book if a flash of the original colour inside the doors would bother you.
Reversibility and Resale
Both films come off. Ming Shine’s vinyl service is built around wraps that remove without damaging the underlying paint and professionally installed and removed colour PPF leaves the factory paint undamaged.
This is very helpful at resale or upon lease return. Under either film, the factory paint has spent years shielded from UV and road grime, so the vehicle can return to its original colour for the next owner. With colour PPF, the covered panels have also been spared the rock chips that mark an unprotected front end.
A respray is permanent. Getting back to the factory colour means painting the car again.
How Each Film Handles an Alberta Winter
Cold temperatures alone are manageable for quality film. 3M rates its 2080 vinyl for in-use temperatures from -54°C to 107°C, though not for extended periods at the extremes, a range that covers Edmonton’s coldest days.
The wear shows up in three other places:
- Gravel and sand. Winter crews spread a salt and gravel mix, and spring sweeping throws it back into traffic. The leading edge of the hood and the front bumper take the most strikes, and that is where thin film shows damage first.
- Sun on horizontal panels. 3M warrants 2080 for considerably less time on horizontal surfaces such as the hood, roof and trunk lid than on vertical doors and fenders, since those panels face direct sun all summer.
- Installation conditions. 3M specifies applying 2080 between 16°C and 32°C. In an Edmonton winter that means a heated, controlled bay, so ask any installer where your vehicle will sit during the job.
Colour PPF answers the first point directly, since its urethane body absorbs the gravel strikes that thin vinyl shows.
Is Colour PPF Worth It? | Which Film Fits Your Vehicle

- Want a new colour on a vehicle you plan to keep for years
- Drive highway kilometres or gravel roads regularly
- Own a new or high-value vehicle and want chip protection built into the colour change
- Want self-healing on every covered panel
Choose vinyl wrap if you:
- Want the widest choice of colours, textures and printed graphics
- Plan to change the look again within a few years
- Drive mostly around the city
- Need branding or promotion on a business vehicle
